MELTWATER – Climate Change Sound Art | By Supriya Nagarajan, Manasamitra
As the Artistic Director of Manasamitra, Meltwater is one of my most powerful responses to the global climate emergency. This immersive sound-art performance transforms real recordings of melting ice, flowing water and fragile landscapes into a contemporary musical experience rooted in South Indian Carnatic vocal tradition.
My aim with Meltwater is to help audiences hear climate change—its textures, tensions and emotional weight. Through Carnatic melodies, electronic composition and environmental soundscapes, Meltwater places listeners inside a shifting ice world where every crack and drip carries a warning.
This project has become a signature Manasamitra work, attracting audiences seeking innovative climate-themed arts experiences. Meltwater blends culture, science and sound into a deeply human reflection on environmental change and our shared responsibility to protect the planet.
