SOUND OF TEA – Immersive Performance, Ritual & South Asian Tea Culture
Sound of Tea is one of my most celebrated Manasamitra creations—an immersive performance exploring the ritual, memory and global journey of tea. Blending Carnatic vocal improvisation, live sound design, percussion and field recordings, the work invites audiences into a meditative world where sound, scent and storytelling merge to celebrate one of humanity’s oldest and most beloved rituals.
Inspired by my upbringing in South India, Sound of Tea draws on the sensory details of tea culture—pouring, brewing, stirring—and transforms them into a layered musical landscape. This project connects the everyday act of drinking tea with wider conversations about trade, community, colonisation and cultural identity.
Presented in intimate settings, galleries and festival environments, Sound of Tea offers a unique, multisensory experience that encourages mindfulness and cultural reflection. It has become a flagship Manasamitra work, resonating with audiences seeking calm, connection and a deeper appreciation of global heritage through sound.
